Hey man, I've got one of your boards I got it off eBay second hand but the thing is still like new. I'm from the uk and was wandering if you remembered shaping my board and if you could tell me any more about it? The measurements are 6"8"20".2 and 3 quarters"#758? If that makes any sense to you? It's got fresh written on the deck and the underneath. This board is sweet I was out the other weekend charging some nasty 15ft+ monsters! caught some of the best waves of my life on this thing! Take it easy Martin.

Hey Aaron, its been a while!
This is a good article, I have always thought that the great strength and weakness of the surfboard design and manufacture community is its diversification, that basically it is made up of thousands of individual often small shapers.
There is a massive amount of accumulated knowledge spread all over the world with no real way of pulling it all together, the trial and error approach to design is expensive for individuals to maintain so "errors" are not really able to be investigated fully. I'm sure it would be difficult for a shaper like yourself to be able to commit 5 maybe more boards to investigating a design thought that may or may not work in the end.
With all the variables in surfing, computer modelling (I imagine) would just be to complex, maybe nano coating boards could give really accurate information as to flow rates on boards, what is and isn't working, but who could afford to make those sort of investments?
I think that it is a real pity that shapers don't share more of their knowledge and experiments with each other more. Like saying to each other "this is exactly what I did and what I found and what particulaly didn't work", where a fresh set of eyes might say if I changed somthing on that board it might work.
If your a mug punter in a boring job, like myself, who spends a good portion of the day thinking about surfboard design, its really hard to get any new thoughts into any sort of forum to be discussed and told why they won't work, let alone actually getting a design in the water.
I rekon most average surfers that I see are on boards that really don't suit them and they would have no idea why or what to do about it.
Fortunatly the beauty of small shapers like yourself and a local client base means you can get the right boards under people.
The only way I can see better designs coming through is to support your local shaper and talk about it to your local shaper.
Fuck sorry about the rant don't even know if any of it was relevant or what any of it really means. Still I guess thats what a blog is.
Cheers bro,
good to see your still living the dream.
